CHRIS SUDDENLY HEARD MUSIC playing from somewhere. “Is that ‘Joy to the World’?”

“Ah! My ringtone,” Gil said. Chris was amazed his granddad knew what a ringtone was. Then again, he was into e-books.

“Where is your phone?”

Gil was about to stand up, when Chris hopped up first. “No, no. Stay there in your chair. I’ll follow the sound of it.” He stuck his head into the hallway and tried to discern what part of the house it was coming from.

“It should be in my room on my nightstand,” Gil said.

Chris dashed into the bedroom, found the phone, and pressed Talk just before the song stopped.

“Hello?”

“Mr. Walker?” the voice on the other end of the line said.

“No, this is his grandson.”

“Oh, hi! This is Katherine Reed. I’m the nurse who helps your granddad with his physical therapy.”

Chris was back in the front room with his hand over the speaker. “It’s your nurse,” he whispered.

The woman on the phone continued. “I don’t think I’m going to be able to make it this afternoon as we planned. The roads are still pretty bad out my way. Can you tell Gil I’m sorry? He should be able to do the exercises himself, as long as he has you to help him.”

“I’ll tell him,” Chris said.

“All right, then. Happy New Year!”

“Same to you.” Chris turned off the phone and handed it to Gil. “It was your nurse. She can’t make it.”

“Too bad you did all that hard work shoveling the drive last night,” Gil said.

“Maybe the two of us will get out tomorrow. The ice doesn’t stand a chance against that sun. She also said I could help you do the exercises.” Chris wasn’t sure how his grandpa would respond to his offer. After all, he was fiercely independent. Having his grandson help him do rehabilitation exercises probably wasn’t one of his New Year’s resolutions.

Gil hesitated, then nodded. “Well, I guess so. Let’s go into my bedroom, and I’ll show you what we need to do.”

“We haven’t finished our discussion yet,” Chris said. “I’m not through protesting.”

“Bring it on!” Gil said with a smile, standing up at the table. He grabbed his cane and hobbled across the hall.
